Cats can be a little mysterious. Because of that, people believe a lot of things about our feline friends that simply aren’t true! Don’t trust everything you hear. Your Mt. Airy, MD veterinarian is here to set the record straight on a few common cat myths.

Cats Always Land On Their Feet

This isn’t true. Cats can slip and fall like anyone else, and often do. In fact, veterinarians have coined a term for cats falling out of open windows and off of high ledges: high-rise syndrome. Don’t let your cat lounge by open windows, and keep them off balconies.

Cats Purr When Happy

This is a half-truth. Cats do purr when they’re feeling content, yes, but experts believe that purring can also indicate other emotions. Some might even be negative feelings, like anger or stress!

Cats Are Fine On Their Own For a Few Days

Your cat is independent, but she shouldn’t be alone for days on end. Food and water dishes will need to be refilled, and the litter box needs cleaning. If you’ll be gone for more than a full day or two, have someone look in on your pet.
