Many people walk their dogs at night, whether by choice or because they must thanks to schedules. It’s important to keep some safety tips in mind when walking Fido in the dark! Learn more here from an Aurora, CO vet.
Wear Reflective Clothing
The number one rule for walking your dog at night: both you and your pooch should wear reflective gear of some kind. Plenty of reflective items are made for dogs, including leashes, vests, collars, and even boots. You can also wear hats, shirts, and shoes with reflective strips. All of this gear will make you much more visible to passing motorists.
Choose the Right Roads
Whenever possible, try to walk on sidewalks. If they’re not available, choose wide roads to walk on; it’s much safer to walk in a wide shoulder rather than on a narrow street.
Clean Up After Fido
Just because it’s dark doesn’t mean you don’t have to clean up after your dog! Not only is it rude, it’s unsanitary. Always bring along a few plastic baggies to pick up after your pooch.
