Are you the proud owner of a pet bird? Part of being a great bird owner is knowing when your feathered companion is feeling sick. Below, your Crown Point, IN veterinarian tells you about three of the first signs of illness in birds:

Cere Problems

Your bird’s cere is the area above the beak that houses the nostrils. Keep a close eye on this area, as it’s a common indicator of health concerns like an infection. If you notice crusted material, discharge, or other abnormalities, let your veterinary professional know right away.

Ruffled Feathers

Ruffled feathers are a part of normal bird behavior, yes. Birds don’t tend to keep the feathers ruffled very long, though—if your bird has kept their feathers ruffled for longer than a full day, something may be wrong!

Loss of Appetite

A loss of appetite isn’t a great sign in any pet, including your feathered friend. If your bird seems to be leaving kibble in his or her bowl constantly, it may be worth a call to the vet’s office. Better safe than sorry!
