Considering adopting a guinea pig in the near future? Be sure that you know what you’re getting into! Your Aurora, CO veterinarian tells you about a few guinea pig care basics below:

Guinea pigs eat a commercially available pellet diet, which must be supplemented on a daily basis with fresh fruits and vegetables like lettuce, carrots, zucchini, apples, kiwi, and others. Be sure to budget in these foods when considering the cost of your guinea pig.

Not all guinea pigs are easily handled, as many are naturally skittish. It may take some time to have your guinea pig warm up to being handled by humans. Ask your veterinarian for advice on proper handling techniques for your pig, and don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t happen overnight!

Your pig will need an appropriately sized cage with space for food dishes, a water bottle, play area, toys, and hiding huts. It will require a solid bottom to hold your pet’s wood-shaving bedding material, which needs replaced every few days or so.
