It’s not uncommon for cats to exhibit some kind of litter box aversion at some point in their lives. If your cat has shunned her bathroom and you’d like to find out why, read on as your Glendale, AZ veterinarian tells you why your cat may not be using the litter box.
Cleanliness of Box
Cats are picky about the cleanliness of their box; if waste isn’t scooped out regularly, cats may avoid the box entirely. Take time every day to remove the litter clumps, and put a small handful of fresh litter back in to replace that which you’ve removed.
Location of Box
Just like us, cats don’t particularly enjoy using the bathroom in a crowded, noisy area. Place the box somewhere that is quiet and isolated so that your cat can do her business in peace. Also make sure the box is accessible at all times and isn’t blocked by a physical obstacle, like a screen door.
Try experimenting with your cat’s litter choice (clumping and non-clumping, scented and non-scented, etc.) to see what she likes best. Sometimes, changing the litter can make all the difference!
