Do you own a bird? If so, it’s up to you to recognize and respond when your bird isn’t feeling well. Here, a Poway, CA vet tells you about three common signs of a sick bird:

Ruffled Feathers

Ruffling the feathers is a part of normal bird behavior, but birds don’t usually leave their feathers ruffled for long. The general rule of thumb is this: if your bird leaves the feathers ruffled for longer than 24 hours, it’s time to seek veterinary attention.

Clouded Eyes

A healthy bird’s eyes will be clean and clear. If you see cloudiness in the eyes, discharge, swelling, redness, irritation, or anything else that looks abnormal in regards to your feathered friend’s eyes, call your vet’s office. Infection, disease, parasites, and more could be to blame.

Loss of Appetite

Like most pets, birds must maintain a steady diet to remain healthy. If you notice your bird is leaving all of their food in the bowl, it may be time to contact your veterinarian for an appointment.

These aren’t the only health symptoms a bird may display when they’re feeling ill. Call your Poway, CA veterinarian’s office to learn about more signs of a sick bird.
